Solving Puzzles of the Itinerant Antiferromagnet UGa3*

Despite a great deal of experimental and theoretical efforts already devoted to UGa3 the microscopic nature of its magnetic properties has not been fully clarified yet. There are several features observed that are either unexplained or remain a subject of controversy. In this paper we summarize the present knowledge on UGa3, emphasize the complexity of its low-temperature behavior with subsequent order–order transitions, and discuss a few hypotheses formulated recently in the literature, i.e. orbital ordering that sets in few degrees Kelvin below TN, structural phase transition occurring in the paramagnetic state, crossover from low-T itinerant to high-T localized spin fluctuations, non-Fermi liquid behavior at the lowest temperatures.
