Elastic properties of the ferromagnetic heavy fermion system SmFe4P12 was investigated by means of ultrasonic measurements. An abrupt decrease was observed at Tc = 1.6 K in the temperature dependence of the elastic constants C11, (C11-C12)/2 and C44, which is in marked contrast with a clear cusp observed in the isotypic ferromagnetic system NdFe4P12 at Tc = 1.9 K. This behavior is likely to be due to an itinerant ferromagnetic transition in SmFe4P12. Besides, a slight dip was observed only in the temperature dependence of (C11-C12)/2 around 60 K. This dip can be explained reasonably by the crystalline electric field level scheme of the Sm ion: Γ5–Γ67 (150 K). The ground state property of the Sm ion in SmFe4P12 is discussed.
