In this study, we analyze a method of controlling the ratios of beam emittances, i.e., the projections of the six-dimensional phase space volume occupied by a charged-particle ensemble. We study difference resonances, induced between the three degrees of freedom, by coupling sources. A possible application of such an emittance manipulation is discussed with numerical examples. The control of beam emittance ratios is thought to be useful in various cases where the emittance of one direction is particularly important, or where the ratio of emittances plays an essential role. ©2007 The Physical Society of Japan
